2. Can ice evaporate?

When it's very cold, ice may evaporate without melting. This change from solid ice directly to gaseous vapor is called sublimation. Sublimation occurs because even in the cold, molecules occasionally gain enough energy in collisions with other molecules to break away from the solid ice lattice.
